4 easy ways to protect your company from the WannaCry ransomware

WannaCry is encryption ransomware that has been able to spread rapidly around business networks be exploiting a vulnerability in Windows. It creates encrypted copies of users files, then deletes the originals and demands a ransom be paid to retrieve them. Users are warned that their files will be deleted if they are not paid within a short timeframe.

As IT specialists in the rental industry, we’ve put together fours ways that you can help protect your hire business from an outbreak.

1. Warn all of your employees to be vigilant and be wary of phishing-type emails
Never click any links within an email from people you don’t know.

2. Update Windows operating system.
Ensure you are protected with the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010 – Critical

3. Update your virus protection. 
Keep your PC secure and your virus definitions up-to-date.

4. Ensure that your data backups are up-to-date and saved on a media not connected to your internal network
Once you have taken care of your daily backups, it goes without saying that you should know how to restore them in the event of any disaster. Learn how to restore your backups from your backup media and test the process regularly. 

I’ve been affected by WannaCry. Should I pay the ransom to unlock my files?

Our advice on this is no. The criminals involved are unlikely to release your files even if payment is received especially with the current focus in the media on bitcoin accounts associated with this malware attack.
